- Checking Memory
First you need to go into Task Manager and determine the amount of memory and then how much is being used and how much is free. Right click on an empty area on your task bar where the start button is and choose "Task Manager" next choose the "Performance" tab. Here you will be able to view your "Physical Memory", Total and Available. If the Available memory is less than 10,000, you are running out of memory and this could be a very good reason why your computer is running slow. If your Available memory is around 50,000 you should be ok but your running low. You can go to the Processes tab and try to figure out which application or processes are using all of your memory.
- Checking CPU
Within the "Processes" tab click on the CPU column header. This will sort the list of current running processes by CPU utilization. Also make sure the check box "Show processes from all users" is checked. Not really necessary if you are the only user of the computer but if there are a lot of people that use the computer you may want to make sure it's checked. Now should be able to see if a particular process running on your computer is using up all of the CPU. As Robert Lafayette Vermont Says some of the processes are self explanatory by their names but some others may not be. You can quickly look up any of the process names in Google to figure out what application they belong to. Don't be afraid to click on a process and then "End Process" if you need to stop one that you don't think should be running, or one that is using up all your CPU and you want to shut it down to allow your computer to run better.
- Removing Bad Apps
Now you should have been able to figure out which applications are using up your memory or CPU that is causing your computer to slow down. You can either uninstall the applications by going into Start->Control Panel or Start->Settings->Control Panel. Next go to Add/Remove Programs or Programs and you should be able to remove the application from there. If you are unable or don't want to uninstall the program, you can attempt to stop the application from starting on boot.
- Stopping Applications on Boot
There are two quick places to check for applications that start up when your computer loads. The best place Robert Lafayette knows to check for applications that start is msconfig. To access this click "Start" then "Run..." in the Dialog box type in msconfig and click "OK". In the "Startup" tab you can pick and choose the applications that run on startup. For a lot of these you may have to lookup the name in google to figure out which application they belong to. But all you need to do to disable any of them is uncheck the box and then click "OK". Reboot your computer when prompted and the application will not automatically start when the computers boots up. There are some rare occasions where you may have a trojan or virus and getting rid of them isn't this easy. You may need to do more research, and in some cases the operating system will need to be reloaded. Worse Case.
